What independence questions are testing

Independence is a property to verify, not a default shortcut. For events it means that learning one event does not alter the probability of the other; for random variables it means the joint law factors into its marginals. The required factorization should be written before products replace intersections.

Exam P deliberately contrasts independence with disjointness, exchangeability, and zero covariance. Questions also use independence to simplify repeated trials, maxima or minima, and variances of sums. The safe habit is to state the exact consequence needed and confirm that the hypothesis supports it.

Recognition audit

Signals that this is the right method

  1. The problem explicitly says trials, components, or random variables operate independently.
  2. You are asked to test whether event probabilities or a joint distribution satisfy a factorization identity.
  3. A joint survival event, maximum, minimum, or repeated-trial count can be expressed as a product across components.
  4. A variance of a sum can simplify only after the relevant covariance terms are shown to vanish.

Before calculation

A disciplined first pass

Name the requested quantity, mark its units or time point, and identify the assumption that permits the formula. Only then insert the numerical inputs. This separates model errors from arithmetic errors and makes the answer-choice comparison auditable.

When the marginal probabilities are positive, this is equivalent to P(A | B) = P(A).

Independent random variables

For continuous variables the factorization must hold over the full joint support.

Variance consequence

The converse is generally false; zero covariance alone need not imply independence.

Three failure modes to catch

  • Treating mutually exclusive positive-probability events as independent.
  • Using pairwise independence where mutual independence of several events is required.
  • Inferring independence solely from zero covariance without an additional distributional reason.
